So I did a search, and two hits came up on this. However, they're both old (one is 14 years old, even..) and neither method has the option to 'automtically log' on connect.

I'm on v4.94 - the last 'stable' version, but it doesn't have an 'Automatically log to this file' option.

Am I too old (do I need a newer version) or was this property moved?

Cheers!

Yup, and like I said, I have no 'Automatically log to this file:' option on that screen. :)

I dunno how to post an image here, otherwise I'd grab a screenshot.

The documentation is a bit vague on this point, but the auto logging applies when you connect.

Thus, if you put a filename in that field (possibly using a date/time modifier to avoid using the same file all the time) then now (when you connect) is the time it will be opened.

The file is opened in "append" mode.
