| Alright, so here's my new problem:
I have 2 computers in my house. One computer hosts Smaug. Both computers are connected to the internet through a hub. The one hosting smaug has no firewall and I have the right IP and everything.
Other people can connect to my Smaug, but not the other computer in my house. Is there something I need to set on the hub? I'm not too sure what the problem could be, as the other computer can connect to other Muds just fine, but not mine. | Top |

| If your trying to connect across your LAN, then you can use the LAN adress, rather than the ISP IP adress. This is usually something like 192.168.*.*, something like that, so instead of going out to the internet, then back again, its just to your hub, then to the host computer, makes things faster as well. |

| If your hub is a router, then typing "ipconfig" at a DOS prompt should work (if you're on 2000/XP.) I believe the command on older versions of Windows is "winipcfg" in Start > Run. |

| Are you trying the LAN address or the WAN address? If your router is configured properly with port forwarding and such, I don't see why the WAN wouldn't work from the other computer. Would be more helpful though if you gave some more specifics (ip addresses, router brandname, etc).
Depending on the brand of router, you should be able to view what IP addresses are being assigned by accessing whatever your router uses for a config or control panel. ipconfig will of course work as well if you're using WinXP/2K, but this way you can also double-check your router's configuration settings to make sure the other computer isn't being blocked from that server somehow.

| I'm using Windows 98 and the hub is a Netgear EN104 Ethernet Hub.
The information from winipcfg is as follows:
This is for my ethernet card itself -
IP Address: 206.116.66.207 (this is the one everyone uses to connect to me).
Subnet Mask: 255.255.248.0
Default Gateway: 206.116.64.254
DHCP Server: 64.114.195.134
DNS Servers: 69.57.146.14
I don't really know what any of that means, really. So how can I determine what's going on? | Top |

| It's a bit strange, you seem to have a routable address for you PC, and not a local one, which suggests you are not using Network Address Translation.
Can you "see" the other PC from the first one for other purposes (eg. file sharing?). |

I'm pretty confused as to what is going on. I don't know a thing about networks, although hopefully I can pick it up fast enough. | Top |

| What do you mean you don't have a network set up?
Can both computers connect to the Internet at the same time?
What happens if you go to the other computer and do the winipcfg stuff? |

I'm trying to visualise how you are expecting to play a MUD between two computers that doesn't have a network set up between them, and not having much success.
You say "both computers are connected to the internet through a hub" and "I don't have a network set up at all". These are really mutually exclusive statements. If they are both plugged into the same hub I would have said they are on a network. |

| Well, I dunno. I didn't set up a network. I just plugged both computers into a hub. I can't see either one from the other using Network Neighbourhood.
Of course, it doesn't really matter anymore. My other roommate bought a router and now I have the problem that NO one can connect. I saw the problem posted previously in the forums, so I'll worry about this.
Thanks anyway ^^ | Top |
