St. Dude the Cleric has learned there is a ghost in the grave yard. A fine place for such a thing to be sure, but the local citizens don't care much for their dearly departed coming back to haunt them and scare the bejeezes out of them, so they ask St. Dude to take care of the situation. Thinking that since he is a cleric and that clerics typically deal in the spirit world perhaps all St. Dude would need to do is hold up his holy symbol mumble a few prayers and the spirit would return to its eternal resting place.

But hold on a moment - or as they say in germany eine minute bitte - the world that St. Dude lives on is a SMAUG world (not to be mistaken with living in Los Angles) and clerics in SMAUG don't have that ability to TURN undead..

Oh sure they can animate the dead, they can even animate an army of the buggers if they have enough mana. And there is no doubt they can make the living die in any number of ways, but why can't they TURN the restless spirits? That is one of the things that makes a cleric so unique is it not? Being able to brazenly thrust their holy symbol in the face of a brian craving zombie or a mummy seeking his mommy, and turning it into dust or making it back away in fear is a function of all clerics - well mabye not the Pope, but we are talking about fantasy here afterall.

So what can be done to aid the poor cleric? Could you make it a skill and base the level of the cleric agasint the level of the undead so that a level 2 cleric could not turn any undead of a significantly higher level?

on a side note is there anyway to also classify monster types? ergo -

ghosts, ghouls, zombies, mummies are all UNDEAD

Orcs, goblins, ogres, are all Goblinoids

pixies, brownies fairies, sprites are all Wee Folks

Carrion crawlers, giant spiders, rot grubs are all insects

you see where I am going with this right?

If there is already a way to do this is there any method for adding more calssifications to that list?
