Yeah, this is a feature I would kill to see...

A mapping util so you can see visual representations of your room layout.

I would like to do something like that, but the big problem is that rooms don't have to be logical. For instance, you could have (in the editor, not in real life):

Room A --> East --> Room B --> East --> Room A

I don't know how a mapper would represent that. Also you have issues where in some cases it isn't obvious how big a room is. eg.

Front Porch --> Living Room --> Bedroom --> Kitchen --> Back porch
|                                                          ^
|                                                          |
v                                                          |
Garden -------------> Side of house ----------------> Back yard

In this example of a hypothetical house, inside the house are three rooms, but outside is one room, but they eventually lead to the same place. It is hard to know how a mapper would work all that out.

the creators of ORB are working on it even as we speak. He doesn't have as much time as he would like, but I've seen the beta work, and it looks pretty good from what I've seen. Even those odd idiosyncrasies with maze type areas where room C would look back to room A. I can't say when he'd be finished with it, but I'm pretty sure that it SHOULD be done within a year or so.

Ah yes, if it is done "within a year or so" then you can see it will be quite complex. :)

Well, for CircleMUD, there's an editor that maps perfectly well, even with the illogical directions.

Here's what it does:
It uses a grid and YOU place the rooms on the grid. Instead of maping it out on paper, you map it here on the grid. Once the rooms are placed on the grid (usualy where you want them logicaly or illogicaly), you may then go over to the settings to the right and type/browse where the exits go. The mapper does NOT link the 2 rooms together from the other direction (here again, the illogical reasons come in - having fun with players' minds).

It's a free editor for CircleMUD and works fairly decently. If you want to examine how it works you can get it off the www.shellmud.com FTP under the editors section of CircleMUD. I like how it worked and it did the job extreemly well. I would strongly suggest if you make a mapper, you do it this way. It makes the mapping so much easier (for the illogical and the logical).

Enjoy :)

I don't know much about programming etc. But if you've got Zmud theres a map maker on it for when your playing on the mud. You could get something like this and maybe have the drawing techniques. Resiable rooms to help make the map to scale could help, also you could just have the lines loop round for example:

      v------------------------
      |                        ^
      |                        |
      ->Room 1 ------> Room 2--^

to represent:
   Room A --> East --> Room B --> East --> Room A

It would make it alot easier then you could have a text box at the bottom to type in the descriptions and coloumns on each side with flags, mobiles and objects created to drag into a room.

(heh I might make this myself? If I weren't a newbie at programming.)

Anyway just some ideas that popped into my head.

Edited by Nick to add [code] so you can see your diagram properly.
