hey, i'm just playing around with the code on my personal computer, not running a mud or anything.

i downloaded smaug1.4a and managed to compile it and get it running. so far, i haven't changed anything in the code. my test character can't practice certain s/s. he's level 2 druid and when he tries to practice create water, for example, it says "you're not ready to learn that yet". other s/s listed for lvl 2 druid practice just fine.

ideas?

I won't be able to say for sure unless you provide a direct link to the full download.

What race? I notice that smaug also seems to have race-specific levels for skills.

Smaug 1.4 is quite old. I suggest getting the latest version as I described today in this other link:

is where I downloaded it from.

my test character's race is half-elf; but, it appears that the race requirements on the slist have been commented out in the source code.

as for updating to the latest code: I'm working on it. :) in the meanwhile, I'm trying to do both. the first one that does what I want it to do wins. X)

There are various downloads here:

Almost all of those are quite old, like 10 years old.

Okay. Sorry. That was the page I got my download from. The file I posted from the page you posted.

You said everything there was old. Does that include the smaugfuss1.9? If there's a more recent version of that, I'll just concentrate on it and drop the other stuff.

I did notice that I have the same trouble with characters being able to only practice certain s/s and not others with the fuss as I did with 1.4; so, perhaps I do have an older copy of fuss1.9? I did a google search and the only other download link I could find for fuss1.9 was this file http://www.smaugmuds.org/download:9:165/smaugfuss1.9.tgz from this page https://www.smaugmuds.org/index.php?a=newspost&t=4378 but the link is dead. I looked at GitHub and DL'd the zip file from your repository but haven't opened it yet. It says it was last updated in 2010.

I'm sorry for being such a noob. I know it's annoying. My husband is the same way with his phone and it drives me nuts. :) Thanks for your patience.

If you look at the directory:

http://www.gammon.com.au/files/smaug/

You can see that smaug1.4a_mxp.tgz is dated July 2001 (17 years ago) and smaugfuss1.9.tgz is dated Mar 2008 (10 years ago).

The link I gave for the Git repository will be to the latest version (some updates late 2017).

See http://www.gammon.com.au/forum/?id=14302 for tips about compiling it.

You are not a noob, it isn't obvious which is the latest version, and indeed the old dates show that the updates (to the code and the web pages) are not all that frequent these days.

Still, it is fun to compile SMAUG and have it come "live" and be able to do stuff.
