ROM server

We are pleased to provide a Win32 (32-bit Windows) port of the ROM server. The original (Unix) ROM server can be found at:

ROM server

In our download area is the Win32 port of the ROM server. Unlike the PennMUSH server it comes with a large number of pre-defined areas and monsters, so within minutes you can have your own MUD game running and have hours of fun playing it.

It is also useful to "get the hang of" playing a MUD before connecting to a "real" one on the Internet.

Help with setting up the server

See FAQs about MUDs for general questions about MUDs, including how to find a permanent server for your MUD.

ROM server forum

Also, there is a discussion forum relating to the ROM server where you can post questions and receive replies.

Area Editor

If you are using the ROM server you will probably find Area Editor handy. This program is designed to facilitate editing of the "area" files used by the SMAUG and ROM MUD programs. Click on Area Editor for more details about it.

Connecting to your own PC

When running your own MUD (or MUSH) it is handy to know how to connect to your own PC, without having to dial-in to your Internet Service Provider (ISP).

To do this, connect to the IP address:

otherwise known as "localhost".

By doing this you can play on your local server without incurring connection costs.
