It zooms by so fast I can't see the error but when I look in shutdown.txt it says Unable to open area list, I searched the forum but nothing came up.
I am using cygwin.

When you're doing what? Shutting down? How are you booting the MUD?

I am starting the mud by using the smaug.exe that I got by compiling all the .c files into .o files with make

Make sure you're running it from the area directory.

Why aren't you using the startup script, though?

I don't know where the startup script is...
So I can't take out the line wiht 'limit' in it and it's not even a guarentee that that will work...
But if you tell me where the startup script is I will try.

What do you mean you don't know where it is? You ran it before, remember? It's in src and it's called "startup".

this is the block with limit in it, should I remove it ?
